I got an e-mail from Blizzard today.  It said my account had been tampered with.  How can this be?  I have not logged in, or done anything in WoW since April, 2009.

So does this mean if I was to ever come back my account is gone?  The e-mail said I needed to go through an account recovery process to get my account back.  do I have to do this now?  What if I do not want to play WoW now, but might want to in November?

Is this just a ploy for me to re-activate my account, get money from me?  Anyone have same issues?

you could always email their supposrt saying your situation and ask your questions to them.
I have not run into this personally.  I think you should kill for it.

Yea, I would just tell them your situation.  I would guess that if your acct. is being tampered with, then it's most likely active right now.  Same thing happened to a friend of mine.  His acct. hadn't been active for 6 months or so and I happened to see him log on one night.  When I whispered him, he logged off.  Every time I talked to him he logged off.  I asked him the next day why he was being a douche and he said it wasn't him, he had no clue...

If Blizz hasn't frozen your acct. you could change your password and try logging on to check it out, I'm sure it will be active, there's no other way to tamper with it.  If they have locked it just hit them up and go from there.  Who knows, you might want to check Cata. out when it drops and you'll want all of your stuff if you do!

I got an email a few months ago stating that Blizzard had received a request to change my password. I was unable to log on successfully. Hack went ingame and found that nobody had touched any of my toons. Seeing as the credit card on my account had long been cancelled, and that I have  absolutely no desire to play WoW, I haven't bothered to pursue it any further.

Same exact thing happened to me Raide, hackers musta been on ur toon for awhile then got caught gold spamming or something. Hard to believe that they would activate ur account rather the just start a new one.

same here, Keleth has been hacked and they even put an authenticator on my battle.net account so that I couldn't even recover it.  I have to fax my license information and photo id etc to blizzard for them to fix it... don't plan on going back so i haven't bothered after initially trying.  I still get email saying the accounts been suspected of violating the terms of use, but oh well.

Check the links they give you and also the email address it's sent from.
It may be displayed as blizzard but may not actually blizzard. I've had a few emails with dodgy links and email addresses.
I blame Hacksoor

If the mail said you had to prove who you are, with password and everything....forget about it.

I would suggest that, if you care, log in to Battle.net, and after you have got an email address that is ONLY for game registration, change the email.

I get 6 or more messages similar to this a day. I have even received fake receipts from the blizzard store for sparkle ponies i haven't purchased.

Your account is still there, and will be there if/when you decide to start back up.
